Public ‘embarrassed’, as charity uncovers thousands of young disabled adults stuck in older people’s care homes

England’s social care system is failing thousands of younger disabled adults who are living in older people’s care homes, warn the MS Society and Care and Support Alliance (CSA) today. These homes were never designed for them and can’t meet their needs, and a new survey of 2,000 UK adults reveals the extent of the public’s concern:

The Care and Support Alliance (CSA) has appointed Caroline Abrahams, Charity Director of Age UK, and Mark Lever, Chief Executive of The National Autistic Society, as co-chairs. They replace Vicky McDermott, Chief Executive of Papworth Trust who is leaving the adult social care sector.

Impact of social care underfunding is evident with the delayed discharge figures for March

NHS England have today published the delayed discharge figures for March 2016, which again show that over 30% of delayed transfer were attributable to social care, rising from 26.9% in March 2015.

CSA response to the January delayed discharge figures

NHS England released its latest stats on delayed discharge from hospital this morning:

  • 61.0% of all delays in January 2016 were attributable to the NHS, 32.3% were attributable to Social Care and the remaining 6.7% were attributable to both NHS and Social Care.
  • The proportion of delays attributable to Social Care has increased over the last year to 32.3% in January 2016, compared to 25.9% in January 2015.

Social Care Sector Response to the Spending Review

Care Quality Commission report is further evidence of the social care crisis

The Care Quality Commission, who are the independent regulator for health and social care in England, released a report today which revealed that 41% of care providers in England were graded as ‘inadequate’ or ‘needing improvement’.
