CSA responds to care cap deferral (17 July 2015)

July 17, 2015

The Care and Support Alliance has welcomed the Government’s announcement that it will delay the introduction of a care cap as the right decision at the current time.

The coalition of leading charities representing older and disabled people, as well as carers and families, has said that more funding for care must be the priority.

Vicky McDermott, Chair of the Care & Support Alliance, says:

“The Government has made the right decision to delay the introduction of the care cap.

The care system is in crisis.

Extra funding is urgently needed, given the hundreds of thousands of older and disabled people who need support just to do the basics – like getting up or out of the house.

This chronic underfunding is also putting unbearable pressure on family carers.

To introduce a cap without doing anything to address the underfunding of social care would be a recipe for disaster.

Looking ahead to the Comprehensive Spending Review, the Chancellor needs to use the opportunity to find a sustainable solution to the chronic underfunding in care.

Only once we have a sustainable care system can we think about introducing a cap.”
